Gamlingay Writers - August 2009 newsletter

4th August 2009

Gamlingay & District Writers’ Group

In spite of only a few of us attending, we had a most interesting and enthusiastic meeting. Once again we must express our thanks to Will and his wife for their kind hospitality.

Introductions:
We were pleased to welcome Madeleine whom Tracey knew as a member at Letchworth. It was good to meet her and she immediately made herself at home with us. Undoubtedly she will be an asset to the group.

Review of Targets:
Both Emma and Jackie are in a phase of consolidation in the writing of their novels! But they have been busy on other writing.

Other News:
There was great excitement when we learned that Will is heavily involved with a publisher, Local Legend Publishing, in the preparation for the publication of his novel. He is anticipating the launch to be in six to eight weeks time. Splendid news Will, we are all proud of you.

Jackie brought a copy of Writers Forum, in order that members can borrow it on a monthly basis.

Discussion of Work:
With Emrys back with us from France we were able to offer our comments on his story, “The Song”, and his true story of an argument in a restaurant. Great stuff Emrys!

Unfortunately, Emma’s contribution was received only by Jackie in time for the meeting, but we were content that Jackie liked it.

Thanks to problems with my PC it is only today that Emma’s story, together with many other Emails, has reached my desk. It is something I am looking forward to enjoying later.

Jackie’s story was, in fact, a copy of her entry in a competition that required the fee to be paid, the piece to be written and submitted through the Net, all within 30 minutes. Wow! What can one say other than well done. We hope you are successful.

Tracey, your story, “A Fun Day Out” was brilliant scene description and dialogue – thoroughly enjoyable, and as Will commented, Max had no part in it.

Due to his involvement with the publisher, Will was unable to contribute this month.

Madeleine entertained us by reading two of her poems. What a talented lady she is, we can look forward to some good times together.

Sarah: People were most kind about my story, and Emma made a helpful comment about the length of some sentences. That will certainly be taken on board.

Break:
No break again this month; we were all having too good a time.

Aims for the coming month:
As we seemed to have jumped a month in Tracey’s original programme for the year (Argument in a Restaurant) it was agreed that the project for the coming month should be Scriptwriting or as an alternative, a story set in a theatre. It will be interesting to see how many opt for writing a play.

Any other Business:
Please note that Will’s Email address has changed.

Will has kindly offered to again host the meeting, but as he will not be available on the first Tuesday in September, it was agreed that we meet 7.00pm on Tuesday, 8th September, at his house.

The anticipated new members, Mike and Jay, were obviously not able to make and appearance for the August meeting, but we hope to see them next month. They will be most welcome.

Last, but by no means least, we all send our best wishes to Tracey for a speedy recovery. We need you back in the chair!

Sarah
