Gamlingay Writers - What Happens At Our Meetings

Location

We currently meet at members’ homes as this is friendlier (and cheaper!) than hiring a hall.

The meetings are not always held at the same person’s home, but the location is never far from the Gamlingay area. Send an e-mail or pick up the phone if you’re interested in coming, and you will be given full directions.

We have a break for light refreshments during the meeting, and this gives us all the opportunity to have a chat and catch up with what everyone has been doing.

Monthly Agenda

1. Introductions

Who we are, what we write about, what we get from the group, overview of how the group works.

2. Review of Targets

A quick run through of the targets agreed at the previous meeting.

3. Competition News

Has anyone entered any competitions? Any results? Details to be distributed of forthcoming competitions.

4. Other News

Details of any future events which might be of interest to members.

5. Discussion of Work

Members to put forward items for discussion. This could be a piece of writing they have been working on, or an idea on which they would like opinions. Perhaps they are stuck with their plot, or want suggestions on how to make dialogue sound more natural, etc.

6. Break

A break for refreshments, and a chance to catch up with other members or have a look through the ‘library’.

7. Aims for the coming month

It is easier to get motivated if you have a target. Examples - for a novelist, to write another 2,500 words or re-write a tricky scene. For a poet – to enter 2 competitions. For a short story writer – to get a first draft completed. The aims are supposed to be fun & motivational, not Draconian! They will be reviewed at each meeting as the focus tends to be better than if they are open-ended.

8. Any Other Business?

For items not covered above.
